Braintech Releases New Vision Software for Service Robots

New Version Developed to Work With MicrosoftR Robotics Studio Version 1.5 Adds Advanced Object Detection Service

September 18, 2007

NORTH VANCOUVER, BC - Babak Habibi, Braintech's CTO, states: "We are passionate about our approach to robot vision that is centered on providing actionable information to robots. This contrasts with traditional vision libraries, which provide numerous low level functions but burden the developer with the task of figuring out how to link and configure these functions to produce usable vision information such as an object’s type or position. With the VOLTS-IQ SDK, robotic developers can focus on the evolution of a product or project as opposed to getting bogged down in the details of which edge detection method or image filter to use".

For the current release, the company continues its focus on providing the most essential vision capabilities needed by every robot, … “the ability to recognize and track an object or distinct pattern”. This capability is now available from two services: Vi_TrackerTM: and Vi_ObjectDetector™. The latest version of Vi_Tracker service can be trained to recognize and localize a given object within an image. The new service, Vi_ObjectDetector, is capable of recognizing and localizing multiple objects simultaneously in an image. Combined, the two services enable a robot to track objects of interest in real time, and acquire and locate new tracking targets as they come into view.

In addition to these core services, the Volts-IQTM SDK 1.5 release introduces Vi_WebCam™, an add-on WebCam service for use with MSRS, with a focus on enhanced stability and added functionality. The company has also bundled Vi_MissileLauncher™, a service for interfacing with the DreamCheeky™ USB Missile Launcher available from http://www.thinkgeek.com/ and other online vendors. This service is used in one of two interesting sample tutorials, using vision to aim and fire foam missiles at a target.

VOLTS-IQ SDK 1.5 ships with source code for two sample projects, demonstrating how developers can use the VI line of MSRS services in their robotics projects.

VOLTS-IQ SDK 1.5 is based on the 1.5 release of MSRS, bringing the VOLTS-IQ product line up-to-date with the latest MSRS release.

Watch for new services and updates as we look towards our next release later this fall.

Braintech is exhibiting VOLTS-IQ SDK 1.5, along with a preview of an exciting new robotic vision technology at the upcoming RoboDevelopment Show, October 25-26 at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, San Jose, CA. To register for a conference pass visit: http://www.robodevelopment.com/
