Remus BocaDr. Remus Boca, Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Sc.
Senior Robot Vision Scientist (Industrial/Government)

Remus Boca joined Braintech in January 2002, bringing tremendous expertise with more than a decade of applied experience in advanced computer programming, robotics, vision and mechatronics. As one of our senior scientists, he played a critical role in modeling, development and implementation of robotic vision technologies such as single and multi camera 3D (SC3D. SR3D. DD3D), auto calibration and algorithms allowing our robots to intelligently overcome the problems posed by irregularly-featured parts. In 1996, Dr. Boca graduated from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. a year later with a thesis on “Off-line programming techniques of industrial robots.” In 2001 he completed his Ph.D., and a dissertation on “Automated computation of industrial robot characteristics.” Dr. Boca has worked with companies such as Automatica S.A. (Romania), Technorob S.A. (Romania), ICG EuroTopo (Romania), Radix Controls (Windsor, ON), and Microsoft.NET.

Robert SimDr. Robert Sim, Ph.D., M.Sc., B.Eng.
Senior Robot Vision Scientist (Government/Consumer)

Robert Sim is from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. He received his B.Eng. (Computer Engineering, '96), M.Sc. (Computer Science, '98) and Ph.D. (Computer Science, '04) from McGill University. His doctoral thesis developed an approach to image-based robot localization and autonomous robotic exploration strategies. From 2004-2006 Dr. Sim was a NSERC/Canadian Space Agency Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia, where he developed a fully autonomous mapping and exploration robot, based solely on stereo vision sensing. In 2006, he was an Applied Researcher in computer vision at Microsoft adCenter Labs, where he worked on tracking, gesture recognition and object recognition. Dr. Sim joined Braintech in March 2007 as a Senior Robot Vision Scientist, and currently leads computer vision R&D efforts in Braintech's Government & Consumer Robotics Lab.

Simona PescaruDr. Simona Pescaru, Ph.D., M.Sc.
Senior Software Engineer (Industrial)

Simona Pescaru’s introduction to computers began during her years at Technical University of Iasi in Romania, where she received her Master of Science Degree in Computer Science and degree in Electrical Engineering, with automation and computers as specialization fields. She later earned her Ph.D. from the same university, writing a dissertation on “Alternate Techniques in Image Processing,” and helping to develop the next generation of computer engineers, teaching several courses including Image Processing and Graphics and Assembly Language Programming. Since joining Braintech as a Vision Engineer in April 1997, Dr. Pescaru has been instrumental in the design and implementation of most of the vision components and solutions used in the company’s projects.

Jeff BeisDr. Jeffrey S. Beis, Ph.D.,M.Sc.,B.Sc.
Robotic Vision Scientist

Jefffrey Beis started at Braintech in August, 2005, after initially being introduced to the company as a computer vision consultant. While at Braintech, In his role as robotic vision scientist, he has provided major contributions to some of Braintech's most advanced technologies, including SL3D (single camera with laser) and RBP (random bin picking). Dr. Beis holds a B.Sc. (Dalhousie) and M.Sc. (U.of T.) in physics, and a Ph.D. in computer vision (UBC). His doctoral work focused on methods to speed up the object recognition process. Prior to Braintech, he ran a consulting company providing computer vision solutions (2003-2005), and before that was a consultant at Point Grey Research (2001-2003), manufacturers of digital stereo cameras, working to improve their stereo processing algorithms.

Mohammad SametiDr. Mohammad Sameti, Ph.D., M.A.Sc. B.Sc.
Project Manager (Robot Vision)

Mohammad Sameti joined Braintech in October 2000 as a Senior Vision Engineer and became heavily involved in the design and development of the eVisionFactory™ software product. His progression to the Project Manager position provided him a deeper knowledge and understanding of the product, its capabilities as well as business relations and the sales process. Prior to Braintech, Dr. Sameti’s work experience included: Senior R&D Engineer at Motion Metrics Inc., Sessional Instructor at the Computer Science Department of the University of British Columbia and various other teaching and research assistantship positions during his graduate studies. Dr. Sameti received his M.A.Sc. (Systems Design Engineering Dept.) from the University of Waterloo in 1994, and his Ph.D. (Electrical & Computer Engineering Dept.) from the University of British Columbia.
